September 2013
How it started
During the development of control algorithms for automated driving functions, the great potential of simulating these functions with the help of driving simulation systems was demonstrated very early on. However, it also became clear that complicated routes and traffic situations can lead to major challenges for the software functions, especially in the form of complicated routes and traffic situations. For this reason, we are now pursuing amplified digitization of real test tracks and test sites. From 2013 the idea of a 'digital twin' of a real urban environment for a as realistic as possible driving and function simulation of automated driving functions in an urban environment.
A required 3D model of a large city offers a large field of other applications, such as planning of infrastructure measures. Soon a highly motivated interdisciplinary working group was formed under the organizational umbrella of the 'Virtual Innovation Forum', which dealt with the first preliminary work. The consistently pursued approach of a sponsored research project, had - after several attempts - finally in summer 2018 success. The SAVe project: was launched.
